Failure load

How the Safety card turns Max FI into an estimated failure load, with a worked example for multiple loads.

The Safety card also reports estimated failure loads for the applied load set.

Failure loads are calculated by proportional scaling of the applied loads, assuming linear elasticity:

Failure load = Applied load / Max FI

For example, if you applied 100 N and the predicted Max FI is 0.25, the estimated failure load is 400 N.

If you applied multiple loads, each one is scaled by the same Max FI. For example, suppose you applied:

L1: (Fx = 100 N, Fy = 200 N, Fz = 0)

L2: (Mx = 1000 N-mm, My = 0, Mz = 0)

If the predicted Max FI is 0.25, the predicted failure loads are:

L1: (Fx = 400 N, Fy = 800 N, Fz = 0)

L2: (Mx = 4000 N-mm, My = 0, Mz = 0)

Note: Failure load = Applied load / Max FI assumes linear elasticity and that the full load set scales proportionally. It is an estimate from the linear solution, not a nonlinear failure prediction.
